The physical removal of the filter content from within the housing involves:
Taking the entire filter housing section off the exhaust of the car.
The housing is opened on a seam to minimise housing visual damage.
The Diesel Oxidation Catalyst remains untouched and is left intact.
The faulty Diesel Particulate Filter element is carefully removed.
The filter housing is welded closed on the seam & the housing section reinstalled on car.
The essential software modification required with a DPF removal involves:
Accessing the map stored on the car's main engine ECU via OBD or direct bench connection.
One of our software engineers will read the original map and save a copy.
The map is modified in house to adjust the software for the absent DPF.
Our process doesn't involve deletion of any error codes which is unnecessary.
The modified software is applied to the ECU & adaptation values are reset.
We offer the opportunity for a discounted power remap during the process:
Whilst our software engineers are modifying the software we can apply a power map as well if desired
There are two types available at 50% discounted rates
A Economy Remap will be tuned around gaining maximum fuel efficiency.
A Performance Remap will be tuned around the attainment of maximum power and torque.

It's a Taboo
Almost 29000 people die prematurely each year in the UK due to particle pollution. This may seem like a small number compared to the number of people in the UK, and it is, but consider how you would feel if one of those 29000 was your mother.
Pollution and it's impact on the environment are always hotly debated subjects and naturally there are moral and legal issues. We will provide you with the information to make your own decision and we won't be judging you either way.
Under The Road Traffic Acts 1988 & 1991, you are committing an offence to knowingly drive a vehicle deemed as unroadworthy on UK roads.
Unroadworthiness comes from the emissions being outside of the EU emissions directives that the Manufacturers fit the DPF to comply with.
There is a separate argument in relation to tax evasion from the vehicle's road tax categorisation being based on dpf emissions.
MOT tests currently only include a visual inspection for the DPF being present, but knowingly presenting a car without the DPF to an MOT centre is also an offence.
The Greatest Myth
The DPF doesn't actually lower the emissions of your vehicle, it actually reduces particulate matter being emitted which is why emissions testing doesn't pick up a difference with or without the filter.
The particulate matter in diesel exhaust gas is a highly complex mixture of organic, inorganic, solid, volatile and partly volatile compounds. Many of these particles do not form until they reach the air. Many carcinogenic compounds have been found in diesel exhaust gas and it is considered carcinogenic to humans.
Particulate matter can cause premature death but its the ultra-fine particles that cause the most damage & the DPF doesn't catch those!
To Be Green
To be frank if you're genuinely concerned about the environment, don't drive a car at all and give up all plane trips!
All vehicle emissions, particularly diesel though, are polluting the environment. So do buses, trains, boats and aeroplanes.
If DPF Removals were never done and all diesels had their filters intact would the pollution really significantly reduce?
Removing the DPF will increase your soot and particulate emissions but because you gain MPG less fuel is burned and carbon dioxide emissions will be lower. Carbon Dioxide is worse for the environment than soot.

So if it's such a taboo and not recommended, why does anyone choose this option?

Temporary Measures Prove that the DPF was the problem Temporary for Diagnostic Testing Purposes Save up for proper repairs whilst still using car
Return To Original Specifications
We have known many customers who choose this process as a temporary measure whilst they save up for a new dpf or wait for one to be available.
Not everyone has the option of being without their car and even less people can afford a big outlay at the drop of a hat. You won't get any judgemental nonsense from us, we're here to help.
As long as you sign the disclaimer and understand what your doing, we'll carry out the temporary bypass for you, no problem. It's your responsibility to get the process reversed at your earliest convenience.
The way we do a dpf removal is completely reversable with a replacement filter (be it new or used). We keep your original map and can reapply the original software.

More Information on DPF Removal
Please note that we only offer DPF Repair solutions where we have carried out our DPF Diagnostics first.
This is because we take customer satisfaction seriously & cannot guarantee satisfaction if we haven't checked that the repairs will actually solve the problem!
If we do repairs diagnosis is FREE so you won't get any additional charges if your existing diagnosis is correct. If it's wrong you'll save the cost of an ineffective treatment & only get charged £55.
Please note that we only offer DPF Removal subject to a signed disclaimer agreement.
The disclaimer confirms that you have fully understood the legality, emissions & environmental impacts of this option and that you are doing it for Track, Offroad, Export or Temporary Diagnostic purposes.
Once the disclaimer is signed and your package choice confirmed we can commence the mechanical bypass procedure in line with the estimate you will have approved.
We will also complete the essential software modifications required with DPF removal as per the information at the top of the page.
There are no modifications made to the error code table on your car with us - that is a botch and we don't do botches!
A Note On Sensors
Even when you remove the DPF the sensors remain in place and continue to take readings. For the process to be reversible and not affect the error codes this is essential. Therefore the sensors have to be fully functioning, if they have or develop a fault they will need to be replaced.
A Word about remap options
We offer power remapping (custom in house remaps) with a 50% discount from usual prices with our DPF removals. Choose from Economy and Performance options as listed at the top of the page.
The final part of the process before you get your car back is the paperwork. After the chemical clean and computer activated regen, the vehicle is taken for a reasonable test drive on a route where different speeds and load requirements can be attained to test the operation fully. Once satisfied the technician signs the job off as complete. A senior technician will complete a final QC check prior to the customer service advisors receiving the completed paperwork.
When diagnosing a DPF problem we may identify other faults with the system that have caused the blockage, such as a sensor or upstream failure such as EGR Valve faults. When we prepare the report and estimates for the most appropriate solution, we will include estimates for any other repairs required. Failure to do these may result in the DPF blocking up again in a short period of time or excessive emissions in the case of removal. Please heed our advice, we aren't out to rip you off, we just know what we're talking about and what will cause further problems.
For best practice we would always recommend having an oil flush and filter renewal with DPF Repairs.
A DPF becoming blocked causes the system to continously attempt regeneration (up until the filter reaches maximum capacity for regen) which involves injecting additional diesel through the system.
This tends to contaminate the oil, hence the recommendation to flush the oil and renew the filter.

Intake System Decoking
An unfortunate side effect of DPF problems tends to be intake system carbon buildup.
Basically the soot and carbon deposits from the diesel system coke up the intake pipes, manifolds, egr valves etc etc. The volume of soot and carbon is much increased once the DPF becomes blocked and inefficient.
We offer multiple intake system decarb options, you'll receive more information from your customer service advisor.

Intake System Leaks
One of the main causes we find for DPF and carbon problems is an undetected intake system leak.
A small split in a pipe may not cause sufficient deviation from expected values for a MAF fault code to trigger, however it will be having an effect on the carbon build up and subsequent DPF status.
We offer a Smoke Pro Plus leak detector test which will highlight any intake system leaks.
From £25 (Basic Check)
EGR Valve Actuators
Exhaust Gas Recirculation basically recirculates a portion of exhaust gases back into the engine cylinders.
The valve is controlled by either a vacuum based or an electronic actuator valve which opens or closes to admit the exhaust under certain conditions. EGR Valve actuators stuck open or closed cause DPF issues.
EGR Valve cleaning can help, alternatively a new part may be required.
From £125 (Ultrasonic Cleaning)
EGR Valve Blanking
EGR Valves can be unreliable and cause problems and as they are a quite expensive part it has become popular under certain circumstances to blank the valve and bypass it from the system.
Mechanical blanking off is required and an engine ECU map adjustment to maintain emission standards.
There are pros & cons to all modifications, request an info pack or ask about this.
From £295 (Full Process)
Swirl Flap Blanking
Swirl Flaps are small butterly valves fitted to the intake manifold just before the cylinder head intake ports and operated with either a vacuum based or electronic servo mechanism.
Carbon build up on the flaps cause them to stick in one position and strain the system. Flaps can break & get sucked though the engine causing catastrophic failure.
Swirl Flap Bypass is therefore very popular as a precaution.
From £165 (Full Process)
Mass Air Flow Faults
The MAF sensor is used to measure the mass flow rate of air entering the engine.
The purpose of this is for the engine control unit to calculate the correct fuel mass. This means that if the mass air flow sensor or associated pipes have a fault, the engine will over or under fuel. This tends to increase carbon build up.
MAF faults need resolving.
From £55 (Diagnosis)
The multitude of sensors on the intake and exhaust system are all linked to the whole system running correctly.
Any sensor faults can trigger error codes & poor running. Even minor inefficiencies or variations can cause carbon build up or inoperation of the DPF regeneration process. A sure way to get a blocked DPF.
Sensor faults need identifying.
From £55 (Diagnosis)
The injectors obviously inject the fuel entering the engine.
If an injector develops a fault the engine will be over or under fuelling. Not only is this bad for the cylinders but it will also lead to increased carbonisation and soot build up. Injector bench testing tends to be the best way of confirming injector status.
Injector cleaning is popular.
From £15 (Per Injecter Test)
Turbo Actuator Issues
The turbo actuator (also known as wastegate actuator) is responsible for controlling the boost output from the turbo by providing a pressure release valve diverting the gases away from the turbine wheel.
Pressure & heat are a recipe for wear & tear. The actuator spring will weaken & allow premature opening or the diagphram could fail.
An EML will likely illuminate, always get this checked!
From £55 (Diagnosis)
The turbocharger works hard and if a problem does develop it would be wise not to ignore it!
Turbochargers get carbonised just like the rest of the system and a Turbo ChemClean will do wonders as a preventative maintenance routine. Keeping the turbine clean definitely increases longevity.
We offer Turbo ChemCleaning or in worse case scenarios replacement of the turbocharger.
From £65 (Turbo ChemClean)
All engines produce carbon as a side effect of the engine combustion process. Carbon Buildup Causes All Sorts of Problems!
Unfortunately not all of the carbon gets emitted via the exhaust system (to be filtered by the DPF), with modern recircularisation systems carbon deposits build up in the intake system. Decarbonisation prevents bigger issues.
We offer Additive Treatments, Chemical Cleaning & Walnut Blasting.
From £95 (ChemCleaning)
Frequently Asked Questions
Good Old FAQs; if we've missed something you want to know - just get in touch
Under The Road Traffic Acts 1988 & 1991, you are committing an offence to knowingly drive a vehicle deemed as unroadworthy on UK roads. Unroadworthiness comes from the emissions being outside of the EU emissions directives that Manufacturers fit the DPF to comply with.
Under current MOT regulations it is only a visual inspection for whether the DPF is present. If this changes, a removal may cause issues with passing an MOT. Our process is fully reversible so we can resolve any problems as necessary. There's always a solution.
The timescale varies slighly between vehicle brand and model specifications. We can generally complete the entire process with one day although we may keep it overnight for quality control purposes. It is rare for a removal to go over two working days.
Depends on why they are requested. For track cars, offroaders and export vehicles it can be the best option for what the owner wants to achieve. If the removal is due to a failing filter and carried out as a temporary diagnostic process then recommendation is the wrong word. We don't recommend dpf removal when there is a feasible alternative option.
If the filter has been removed we may be willing to help with a software modification only package but we would want to verify that the removal has been done properly or you would need to sign yet another disclaimer. It would be dangerous to just modify the software and leave the filter in place. Without the regen process there could be a fire risk from the resulting blockage.
Yes. The other systems on your car are designed to function with low ash content fully synthetic engine oil. Failure to do so will generate a lot of carbon and carbonise the intake system, EGR valve and likely create plumes of smoke from the exhaust since the filter won't be there to reduce the particulate.
